Les Chansons des Perverts is a compilation album released in 2001. The reason why I am now reviewing this album is because I just recently obtained it again after nearly 6 years of not having it. This album was released on the German label, Crippled Dick Hot Wax!, a name, I know, that is somewhat off-putting but when it comes to music I don't like to judge a book by it's cover. This album is chalk full of surprises that will tickle every sense on your musical pallet. The opening track is a lovely tune entitled "Come In My Mouth", a song that originally appeared in the sex musical "Let My People Come" in 1974. From there you are taken on a whirl-wind of genre bending, breaking, and defying tracks. This joyride of funk, turn of the century electronic, and what sounds like the opening credits to a 1970s science fiction series is an amazing mixture of very talented, yet mostly unknown artists.
Given that Crippled Dick Hot Wax! isn't a very largely known label, especially here in the states, and considering most of these artists are as equally known here, this album is kind of a hard gem to come across. I was lucky enough to score it used from an online merchant. I really feel this album should be sought out by any fan of electronic music. Unfortunately my knowledge of electronic music that existed when this album was released is limited to Fatboy Slim, Moby, and Daft Punk, none of which I would compare to this album. I'd say most these artists were ahead of their time. I compare this sound to say, Pretty Lights's "Taking Up Your Precious Time" album, but with a lot more of a World influence, and I'm talking from all around the World. Many songs have traditional South American, African, Middle Eastern, and French feels to them. When I say it's electronic music I'm not talking about house music, I'm referring to ambient electronic music. I really wish I could elaborate more on the styles this album has to offer but it's just so unique to my musical experiences, I have trouble defining it.
If you own this album and haven't given it a listen in some time, take it out and give it a once or twice over again. I think you will find that rediscovering this album could be the best thing to happen to you in a while. If you are now inspired to find this album I wish you the best of luck.
