Trooping the Colour 2011 in London

Trooping the Colour is the name of the parade to mark the Sovereigns Birthday, which is a tradition that was started by Kind George III in 1760. The only time that this tradition was not upheld was during the war years and in 1955 when a national rail strike forced the event to be cancelled.

The Queen has two birthdays, her actual birthday on 21st April and her Official birthday takes place in June; in 2011 it will be 11th June. It is usually on the Queen's Official birthday that the Trooping of the Colour in London takes place.

The Trooping the Colour '11 in London is a parade performed by the Queen's Guards on Horse Guards Parade. The Queen attends the ceremony and receives the Royal Salute as the troops march past. Around 1400 service men and women take part in the ceremonies, who are all fully trained and operational members of the Household Division of the Queens Guards. During the parade, the Royal Military bands take part to provide an acoustic support to the ceremony.

After the parade, the Queen returns to Buckingham Palace where the Queen and the Royal Family members watch RAF aircraft fly by from the balcony of Buckingham Palace. If you are lucky enough to secure a place outside the palace you will be able to see the members of Royal Family wave at the adoring well wishers outside.
